Has anyone ever tried using SAND for nesting box?

Extrapolated from the suitability of sand in the run and on floor of the coop.

Seems it would be really easy to clean, it's relatively soft to sit on, easy to make a hollow to cradle the eggs, and so on.

I wonder if the chickens would think it was a dusting box and make a huge mess...

or would they use it only for nesting because it would be raised and sheltered and a dust box provided down on the floor?
 
I personally haven't heard of anyone doing it but I see no reason that you couldn't give it a try. Then you can tell us how it works.

Hopefully if someone here has personal experience with it they'll chime in.
 
I use spanish moss.
