Has anyone ever used a cooling pad?

I'm planning ahead for ways to keep the girls cool in the Texas summer and I've seen kiddie pools with water and rocks, DIY evaporative coolers, etc. I have pretty good ventilation in the coop vis-a-vis a cross breeze as well as a ceiling vent on a thermostat but I'm concerned about staying cool when outside. I was looking for cooling pads for my dogs and wondered if the same would work for chickens. I'd be most worried about them scratching and revealing whatever gel or cooling materials are inside. Thoughts?

I think some cement papers, in the shade, slightly damp, might be better. I don't think the chickens can scratch through the vinyl but I'm not sure. Shaded, damp bathing spots usually work for mine, though I don't get as hot as you.
