Has anyone in VA ever had to pay property tax on their coop?

    I was just curious! My brother-in-law thinks that we will have to pay property tax on our coop. If we do, we do. I was just wondering! [​IMG]

    I have 2 barns. Nowhere are they listed on the property assessment. I will pitch the biggest fit you ever wanted to see and create mayhem if they ever try to add them. Why? 1 has been standing since this house was built (100 yrs) and one was built in 1915. They can't ever say they didn't know they were here because they are as big as my house.

    well not sure of that but can tell you this i have in laws who live in VA and they had to pay taxes on there appliances,fridge and stove..nuts i tell you just pure crazy

    That's truly surprising MissPrissy! My bro.-in-law has several buck barns around his farm and his old barn that has been there for at least 70 years and has to pay tax on every single one of them. The buck barns aren't even being used! Sometimes I really have to scratch my head about the state of VA and their property taxes! [​IMG]

    Hopefully, I won't be taxed on my coop. [​IMG]

    it seems to vary from county to county. Here in Pittsylvania you will start paying only if the acessor(sp?) deems it worthy.
    Also seems that if you claim it on State taxes as a Bis. expense they'll get ya there too!
    Two things in Life are certian DEATH and TAXES.

    That's the whole reason behind them making you get "building permits" for everything you add to your property, is so they can increase the value and raise your property taxes, not to mention charge you for the permit.

    In all reality. You do pay taxes on the out buildings. IF they have any value it is added to your assessment.

    If the county knows about it, you may end up getting a larger bill, depending upon your county and whether or not they think a coop is a significant "upgrade".

    Don't expect it to be outlined on your assessment. Actually, it is good to talk to an assessor, because we found out that they thought we had a carport on our property, which we definitely do not. I don't know if our taxes will go down tho. Funny how that works, eh?

    Now that the housing bubble has burst, I haven't seen them out here putting the value of my house back down where it should really be, and I can't get them to buy it for what they "claim" it is worth.

    I think the only time you pay taxes is if you get a permit to build or if the accessor somes out, which they do every so often, and writes it down as a small building. It may cost alot, I'm not sure but you can throw some poop on the accessor if he tries to write down that its worth more than $1000.
