I just put 8 eggs in a cabinet incubator yesterday. Average weight was 630 grams and Temp is set at 96.5, humidity is 28%. This will be my first attempt at incubating emu eggs as my male has always hatched out chicks. Anyone else incubating? [IMG]

5 days in and my eggs have all lost weight, average weight was 617 grams which is 2% loss. Humidity is still 28-30%, should I increase it or is this loss ok?

  4. I take each starting egg weight and calculate 15% of that weight and divide that number by 50 days. That will give you the desirable daily weight loss for each egg. I prefer the individual tracking rather than and average as the shells can be so different in their ability to loose moisture.

Yes, I put in 4 eggs and they are due the 14th of February and was wondering my eggs started out at :
    570g-then-531g
    579g -then-525g
and the others were put in a week a go and weighed
    610g-then-600
    600g-then-582g
is this an ok weight loss or are they off do I need to change anything.

    sorry
    570-then-525g
    579-then-531g

This is your weight loss on each egg as I understand it from your post but it is not clear over how many days for each egg. So before you change anything in the incubator environment you need to know what your daily weight loss is for each egg. It can be calculated this way:

Take the first egg:: 570 g is the starting weight.15 % weight loss over the whole incubation time is the ideal for embryo growth. 15% of that starting weight would be 570 divided by 15% = 570 x .15 = 85.5 g target total weight loss over 50 days. So each day's ideal weight loss would be 85.5 divided by 50 days = 1.71 g per day for that particular egg.

    Your eggs actual weight loss: 570 - 525 = 50 g. Calculate daily weight loss: 50 g divided by # of incubation days = ?
Compare this number (?) to target daily loss of 1.71 g per day. If the egg is on target then nothing to change if not there are some things that can be done. Let's talk about those things after you have made your calculations.

Ok so the eggs and yes you were correct they were per egg and sorry for the inconvenience but the total loss per day is eggs 1=2.17 each day egg 2=2.18 each day egg 3= 1.42 each day egg 4=2.57 each day

  9. Start Weight Target Weight Loss/day Actual Weight Loss/day Action Taken
    570 1.71 2.17
    579 2.18
    610 1.42
    600 2.57

Can you fill in the missing information before we look at what can be done to the weight losses that need to line up with the ideal please.
