Chicks need to be warm so if you incubate or hatch a chick in the off season even if it has a mom it must be indoors for at least 6 weeks or longer before going outside.

I made a homemade cardboard box incubator, and hatched a baby chick in Jan. I was lucky to have a silky momma hen and brought her in at night to sleep with and visit the baby. (It would be hard to have momma in the box inside all day because she would want to scratch and feed the chick) During the day I had baby chick in the box with mirrors set up so she would not be lonely, and stuffed animals. Then when she got to be about 4 weeks old I set up momma and baby and two clamp lamps in an old kitchen cabinet. They are happy now.
