My chicks are finally hatching....5 over nite and some more pecking thru but one of the guys that hatched last nite had a slimy red thing attached to it's rear and I just checked on it and it died. What was that thing and is it ok to leave a dead one in there while the others are bumping around and 2 others starting to peck out just a bit. I don't like seeing them peck at the dead one ( not much but here and there ) and is it unsanitary??

I personally would take it out very quickly. Just a quick grab and close. That red thing is like an umbilical cord that was attached to all the little veiny things (sort of like a placenta) inside the egg, and apparently it didn't dry up. Maybe the little chick hatched a bit early.
