Went out to let my ducks out of their coop into their pen and my Muscovy hen, Katniss, was laying dead in the middle of the nesting area. Her body was twisted to the side a bit and she was pressed into the mud (had a toN Of rain the past few days)

She was stiff as a board so had been there a few hours at least. I was worried about avian flu but after an inspection, the back of her neck was missing some feathers like she had been mated. And her poor little neck had been broken. I’m fairly certain that the male Muscovy I took in was the culprit.

My male crested isn’t that big. My pekin male is, but I honestly don’t recall the last time he tried to mate one of the girls. He has zero drive. The Muscovy male though had been very aggressive when we first got him. But he had mellowed out. Never had an incident overnight before

So am setting it up to keep him separated tonight and have someone willing to take him in. He’s a bit of an outcast in the flock. Only one female pekin hangs out with him. The other ducks hate him and aren’t that friendly towards her because of it. So giving him a new home tomorrow where he will be happier I hope

I’m so heartbroken. Katniss was such a little mischief maker. But was also very sweet. She is missed

My other Muscovy, the one with the white head, primrose. Is devestated. Got them together and they were sisters. When it was time to put them in their coop for the night she normally would have me chase her around with Katniss for a while. Instead tonight I got everyone in and she was just sitting on the edge of the pool. I walked over and got up next to her. She never let me that close. She just looked around the pen.. then looked at me. The hopped down and walked inside the coop without any real fuss. It was one of the saddest things I’ve ever seen

Such a sad story. I am so sorry for your loss and for Primrose loss.

Actually, I am sorry for your muscovy drake too. Muscovy drakes are so big compared with muscovy females and like all drakes [except perhaps your pekin] your drake has drake hormones. I hope you can find a good home for him.
