Heat lamp for chicks

My chicks are 5-6 weeks old and i have them in the coop outside. Do they still need a heat lamp during the day or just at night? Its about 50 degrees outside during the day. Should i leave the coop open so they can go in and out as they please when its this cold or should i leave them in coop?

Are your chicks fully feathered yet? If they are not fully feathered I would leave it on. Some people say leave it on, others will say turn it off. If it was me I wouldn't risk it.

I would go ahead and turn it on until the birds are fully feathered. If you notice them not standing near it or ignoring it during the day, then you can probably turn it off. If they stay near it or huddle underneath it then leave it on for them.

I turn mine off at about 4 weeks, they cuddle to keep warm at night. High 70 low 50
