I bought a red heat lamp from my hardware store, it is the bathroom heat lamp. My chicks are maybe 4 days old? And I find the heat lamp very warm, so I have it up quite high so it doesn't bake them. Any body else use a bathroom heat lamp? Should I go and get an actual heat lamp from the farm store?

If you think it is a hazard, I would go to your local farm store and get a 200w (or it may be 250w) red heat bulb with the appropriate lamp.

We need more details as to how much wattage it is. 250?

Those can put out a lot of heat. As you yourself said, you're aware of cooking them. Easy to do in a small brooder where the chicks cannot really escape to cool place to self-regulate.

I ended on getting a proper chick lamp, as the other heat lamp was way too hot!! Thank you :)
