Heat lamp weaning

What are the rules of thumb to weaning chicks off the heat lamp? I have them in my furnace room with a 250 red bulb. They are 17 days old now and doing great.

The heat lamp should be reduced 5 degrees each week. By one month it can be removed completely if the chicks are ready.

What is the temp in the brooder ?????

The temperature is reading 78 degrees f. I have been moving the lamp higher as they are growing. Today I turned the lamp off for several hours.

Your temp is fine and you are doing it right by backing the lamp up as time goes by ....

By week 3 I normally turn the light off during the day so the feathers start growing as long as the room temps are over 50F ...
