Because of a power outage starting last evening, my chicks are now without their heat. They are 5 weeks old today and are pretty much feathered in.

I had been brining up the lamp to lower the temp.

So at this point.... if they do ok today, do I really need to worry about putting the lamp back on once the power returns??

    THANKS!!!!

What are your ambient temperatures? -10F at night? 35F at night? 50F at night?

    Good Question!

They are in the basement and doesn't get below 50 at night.

They definitely don't need heat in the basement.
Mine the same age are outside with no heat. Drops into the 30s at night.
Going into winter they shouldn't be coddled. They need to be ready for the real cold.

    edited for spelling

[IMG] Then, they are fine. If you had them out in the coop, I'd probably suggest a 100Watt bulb for a few nights during acclimation.

I keep my chicks outside after 3-5 days old with a 150W bulb and a brooder. I found one chick that somehow escaped and looked dead. Put it back in the brooder and it popped right back to life. Since then we rebuilt out growout pen and they are so toasty in there being outside and all.

Mine are about the same age they are outside in their coop but I do put on a heat lamp at night. They go out during the day.
