heat lamp

I have my heat lamp in the middle of my brooder and the chicks will all cram in the corner of the brooder. Do they no longer need the heat lamp?

Raise it up, until the chicks start spreading out. It's too hot for them.

Your lamp may be too close to them. Too much heat and they'll try to avoid it! What's the temperature under the lamp?

If they are avoiding the lamp, it it too warm for them. Chicks will tell you about the temperature better than any thermometer.
