my chickens are currently in a plastic box and are starting to grow a lot ant i was wondering if i should keep the heat lamp on them. They were born on December 4 and i don't want them to die.

Welcome to BYC! [IMG]Chicks should have heat lamps on them until they are fully feathered and able to withstand the cold, which usually is at 6-8 weeks old. Starting at 95 degrees F. for the first week, the temperature should be decreased (by raising the heat lamp, etc) by 5 degrees a week, until you don't need the heat lamp anymore because room temperature has been reached.

Hi there, [IMG] and welcome to BYC!

Wyandottes X2! They need to be fully feathered and 6 weeks old before they can tolerate temp changes, and adjust their own internal heating and cooling.

Good luck with your babies and enjoy BYC!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! If your chicks were hatched Dec 4, they should be just over six weeks old? What temperature are you keeping the brooder? They should be pretty well feathered and be able to deal with room temperature in your house, you might want to start gradually reducing the amount of heat they are getting if you still have them under a heat lamp all the time.
