My chicks are 7 weeks old. It is about 55°during the day and about mid 40's at night. Should I give them heat all the time or just at night? Or not at all?

You need to work on not giving heat during the day. At 55 to 60 they should be fine.

Then start giving less heat at night.

I haven't been giving them heat during the day for about 4/5 days now. It is going to get down to 41°tonight. I was thinking of not turning it on tonight. I went to close and lock the run door and turn the heat lamp on last night and they weren't huddled up together. 4 were next to each other and the other 4 were spread out. I just don't want to shock them or make them sick. I just fear if I don't do it soon that it will be too much of a shock when it gets even colder.

Then I would just watch them see how they act in the morning. It is only going to get colder. And you don't want them depending on the heat lamp.

Chickens are much tougher then people give them credit for. [IMG]

    Good luck

Thank you, Farmer Ken! Here's a picture of them eating a little squash and yogurt. [IMG]

My broodie hen hatched 3 of 4 eggs 10 days ago in her own little hutch. I live in southwestern Pa no heat except for mom. It was in the low 40 degrees this morning and they were out in the open part of the hutch scratching and eating with mom. They didn't seem affected at all by the temp.
