In the Brooder
I've had chickens for about 3 years. It started as just "I want fresh eggs," but it's somehow morphed into "I also like chicken meat" and "I sell eggs" and then it got crazy and now it's become "I must have heritage and/or pure breeds and I want to sell chicks and solid laying stock."
Right now I have the following:
- 7 layers (1 Rhode Island, 4 Black Stars, and 2 North Stars)
- 1 rooster (Black Star)
Then the up and comers on deck are:
- 2 Black Star chicks for meat
- 4 Rhode Island chicks for layers
- 14 Icelandic eggs hatching for layers/breeding stock
- 6 Black Star/hybrid eggs hatching for meat
It sounds convoluted, but it's really not. I took the spreadsheet someone posted here, altered it to add a sheet for hatches/chicks, and one for flock planning/breeding. It's pretty organized.
I've been lurking here in the forums for a few years, never signed up because I never needed to -- I showed up, searched for info, and left. But I think it's time I actually join the community. I really need others to keep me from getting hatching eggs of wild, crazy breeds just because I don't have them yet.
As for me, I live with DH and the dogs on the side of a mountain in Western Montana. I'm all about self-sufficiency -- hence my fascination with chickens. I'm here to learn, to share what I've learned, and hopefully be a positive member.
Thanks for reading. Nice to meet y'all.
