Hello everyone. Obviously I am new to this site so I wanted to say Hello and Good morning. Well a little about me... I'm 32 and happily married to the love of my life, mother of 2 but I have many that have adopted me as Mom, and hopefully two more in the future. I have no homestead yet, I'm just in the planning stages. I have a little over an acre that the tribe is going to help me clean off. The people I evicted were not the cleanest individuals. Once that is done, I'm bringing in truck loads of... I guess soil. Its a mix of fertilizer, soil, and compost. Anyways this will be going down, then my landscaping can happen. I will be leasing the mountain side behind me,which is 5 acres so I can run livestock (woohoo)! My dream is, 25 chickens (I have a huge extended family), a few ducks, couple turkeys, meat rabbits, goats (brushers, meat, and milk), maybe a milk cow (most likely), a breeding pair of pigs, guard geese and a warden peacock, a veggie garden, a rabbit garden, and our smoke house will be rebuilt. Once again this is my dream and will take time to build. And a few dollars as well. Any shortcuts and ways to save are welcome, and i hope to keep everyone updated on the progress of our little homestead. I have lots of questions and very eager to learn! I hope my frequent questions are not going to be bothersome. Thank you to all in advance.

    Respectfully, Betty Mae Anderson

Oh I forgot to add my husbands buddy... He wants a mini goat. He had one when he was younger and it acted just like a dog. It even chased cars! According to my husband this goat shall have run of the property and be King Goat Goat. I beg to differ however LOL

And my children want pet Silkie Chickens. Any input on these as pets?

Welcome to Backyard Chickens. Silkies are very popular with children, and with adults who prize them as natural incubators. They aren't the best layers and other breeds tend to bully them because of your very different appearance. Due to their big beards and crests, they vision is obscured. They can jump high but, not fly - so sitting ducks for predators.

p.s. some think silkies are dumb but, if you cut back their crests so they can actually see - their IQ shoots up many points.

you forgot guineas, they are a great alarm system and seem to alarm at everything. On the pro side they are great tick eaters and will mob and kill snakes

Snake killers huh? We always had massive amounts of kingsnakes growing up. Literally! My brothers hauled away 200+ out of our rock wall, when I was a toddler. That was the property next to my acre. Once they moved the kingsnakes, all the rattlers came out. I may have to look into these guineas. Are they "mess" or loud? Would they kill rattlers? AKA rattle snakes LOL
