Hello.
My Name is Ken. I live in Riverside, California. In October 2010 I got a brilliant idea to get 2 chickens so we could have a few fresh eggs. I made arrangements to buy 2 hens. I built a cute little "barn" with an attached outdoor enclosure. The day I was supposed to pick up the chickens, the person I was getting them from told me that one of them crowed that morning. So, the coup stayed empty for a couple weeks while I sourced out new chickens. I found a great local breeder, and my two chickens suddenly became six day-old chicks. Two Marans, two Silkies, and two Ameraucanas. Being very new to raising chicks, I had a problem with two of the chicks having a pasting problem. One ultimately died. I did not want a odd number of chicks, so I got two more Ameraucanas and one New Hampshire Red. They have all grown to be big chickens. One of the silkies and one Ameraucana turned out to be roosters. I kept the Silkie because he is small and not very loud, but I live in an area where I cannot have loud roosters. I returned the Ameraucana rooster to the breeder and somehow ended up leaving with with six more chicks.
Needless to say, the two chicken "barn" is now the brooder and I built a MUCH larger chicken house with a nice outdoor area.
Currently I have:
Adults
2 Marans (Jennifer and Clarissa)
2 Silkies (Owl and Bea)
2 Ameraucanas (America and Blonde Blonde)
1 New Hampshire Red (Red)
Chicks (I don't get too attached or name them until I know for sure they are hens)
2 Frizzles
3 Mottled Javas
1 Cochin
