Hi everyone! My name is Maia and I am a mom "gone rural"! I and my family have 8 wonderful hens who we call The Gallinita Girls and who provide us with 1/2 dozen large eggs a day -- yum! We have 4 RIRs and 4 black Australorps and they are as cute and funny and full of personality as can be! I had no idea how fun having chickens would be (this is our first year). I also had no idea how fulfilling it would be to eat eggs provided by chickens you know and love and care for.

Our farm is called Ash Haven Farm and I'm just starting a website for us -- http://www.ashhavenfarm.com -- and we are located in NE Colorado on the S. Platte River. We (my husband Steve and I) "went rural" with the 2 youngest of our 6 children Quinton and Grace (the other 4 have "left the nest") and absolutely love it!

Along with our lovely "Gallinita Girls", we have 2 alpaca (Turi and Taos), 2 miniature horses ( a mare, Tillie and her 2 month old foal, Rosie), 2 nubian dairy goats (Mandy and Delilah), 2 dogs (Tinna and Cody), a cat (Lucky), 2 minilop rabbits (Sasha and Samantha) and 7 french angora rabbits (Pebbles, Daisy, Buck-eye, Isabella, Cindy, Lulu, and Marley).

We grow organic veggies and fruit and herbs and teas and flowers starting each spring and are always growing and expanding and learning about gardening and our animal friends.

When I'm not playing with the animals or the kids or doing stuff on the farm (I just can't quite call it "work" -- I read somewhere once that work is something you do when you'd rather be doing something else -- that stuck with me, I guess), I'm homeschooling, writing, knitting, playing backgammon, learning to quilt, cooking, learning new things and building new skills, painting, taking photographs, checking out the sunset in the hammock, or online like I am now reaching out to new people who are "Going Rural".

For my 47th birthday a few days ago, I decided to start my own blog http://ashhavenfarm.livejournal.com , a way of kind of opening up my journal to share my experiences of going from an urban-dweller to a rural country girl in the hopes I can encourage folks thinking of going rural and supporting those who HAVE "gone rural". And here's a blog posting I just finished about the simple joy of hens -- my daughter finding a really big egg -- what a delight it was: http://ashhavenfarm.livejournal.com/1151.html.

Anyway, I have begun reading posts in this community and I can't wait to jump in and connect! I love how much FUN people are having with their chickens! They are absolutely the brightest, full of life creatures I've ever come across! I am SO happy to have them as a part of our lives.

So, thanks for having me and I look forward to "e-meeting" you!

    Hi Maia!
Welcome to BYC! I'm almost brand-new too, and also in Colorado. We went semi-rural 6 years ago and live in Black Forest, just north of the Springs. This is also my first year with chooks.
    "See" you around!

Thanks everyone, for the warm welcome! And a special hey to you fellow Coloradans!
Glad to be here! Am perusing pics of you all right now -- love to see the faces and the animals. Still getting used to connecting through words from my computer to yours :)
    Waiting for the sunrise...
p.s. I notice people don't post their real names here, is that right? I'm seein' DH and DW too -- finally figured out what they mean - ha ha. I'll get the hang of this!
