Hello from the Malmo's! 1. "Are you new to chickens/When did you first get chickens" We are brand new chicken enthusiasts. Our 11 year old son fell in love with them years ago, but our city had ordinances against keeping them. This year they repealed the ordinances. We ordered our chicks from MyPetChicken.com and will receive them the week of July 12th. We are excited and nervous all at the same time. We want to be the best chicken parents possible and anticipate that they will be as spoiled as our other pets. 2. "How many chickens do you have right now?" We don't have any chickens at the moment...we are eagerly awaiting their arrival this July. 3. "What breeds do you have?" We are expecting a Blue Silkie, a Bantam Barred Plymouth Rock, a Buff Orpington, a Silver Laced Wyandotte, a Buff Laced Polish, and a Bantam Buff Brahma...all female, as Bentonville codes will not allow males. We researched as much as we could and attempted to put together a group that would be docile, make good pets, and lay eggs (well except the Polish - which we have read is an iffy layer). Like I said though, this is EXTREMELY new to us...we are greener than a set of Army BDU's so feel free to offer constructive criticism where and when necessary. We want beautiful, healthy backyard birds that also happen to lay yummy, healthy eggs. Did I mention that we are a bit nervous too? 4. "How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?" We came across BackYardChickens.com while trying to research what the best brand of feed (from start through adult) is needed to keep our birds happy, healthy, and gorgeous. We have been having trouble finding anything that mentions an actual brand of food - unless, of course, it is an ad or article sponsored by that brand. Our babies aren't hear yet...but our intention is to be completely set up and ready to go the minute they get here. 5. "What are some of your other hobbies?" Our hobbies consist of our children, martial arts, school, and the 115th Composite Squadron of the AR Wing of Civil Air Patrol. Our high school mascot may be the tigers, but we are CAP 115th Nighthawks through and through. 6. "Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share." We are a family of 5. Mom and dad have been married 17 glorious years. Dad is a martial arts instructor. Mom works part time for the best real estate team in our area and will make 2nd Lieutenant this July in our Civil Air Patrol squadron. Our oldest daughter is 15. She is also a member of our squadron and has her sights set on the Air Force Academy as soon as she graduates. The middle child, also a daughter, is 13. She is a member of our squadrons competition color guard team. She is still trying to figure out what she wants to do. Our son, the chicken lover, is 11. He is so in love with chickens that he hasn't eaten chicken in a couple of years now. We all also volunteer for a local animal shelter and are currently fostering a special needs cat for them. Since she has gotten here she is no longer emaciated and has become one of the most spoiled rotten divas you will ever meet. Speaking of spoiled rotten...we also have two guinea pigs (Lola and Lyla) and a rabbit (Mocha). We are looking forward to being a backyard chicken family. We hope that this will be the start of a wonderful and mutually beneficial relationship between our family, our future birds, and the BackYardChickens.com family.
