Have you thought about breeds yet? I recommend the buff orpington. They are friendly, docile, great layers, confinement bearers and affectionate.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. Have you got a particular breed you want? Murray McMurray has an excellent "chick selector" at http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/chick_selector.html to help you determine the best breed for you if you're not sure. Just be sure to click on "show more characteristics." My personal recommendations are Black Sex Links; hardy, friendly, and egg laying machines. Or if you want a standard breed (BSLs are hybrids and will not breed true), I recommend Black Australorps. They are very hardy, calm and gentle, and the best layers of the standard, brown egg laying breeds. Whatever breeds you decide to go with, good luck in getting your tractor built and with your flock.
