We have kept chickens for less than a year, and though we have books and have looked here and elsewhere electronically, we fall into the 'nearly clueless' category compared to many here. We wanted Dominiques to help maintain an historic breed and to have thrifty foragers to supply us with meat and eggs. We bought our original 10 from a local man, 2 cockerels and 8 pullets. We put one cockerel down because we believe he had pox, both respiratory and dermatological, and he appeared to be suffering with respiratory distress. We have lost two pullets to predators; one simply disappeared, but we found the carcass of the other after running some red-tailed hawks off. We hope at least some of the remainder will go broody and that we can hatch some chicks. We are now not certain that we received purebred Dominiques, though that's what we were told we were receiving. I posted a few photos last night on the University thread, hopefully not too outside the rules, to see if others can help with breed ID. I see now that I can also post on a breed ID thread and will do so. Thanks for a great site!

! Great to have you in our flock! Sorry your initial experience with chickens was less than spectacular. BYC will give you the knowledge to go from "nearly clueless" to "wise chicken keeper." Have fun with your flock!!

Hi from Colorado

I have an aunt and uncle in Tampa. You don't sound clueless to me. What I did to keep the

hawks away was get a dog. He's my best friend, too.
