Hi, Everyone! My name is Amanda. I am a SAHM, old lady at heart (I love to knit), proud crazy cat lady (there's 4 roaming around the house), and now I guess I can add 'Chicken Lady' to that! I'm a SAHM, and after several years of nagging ([IMG]), I finally convinced the Hubster to get some chickens. We recently moved from the city to the country - so what's the point of living in the country, and having land if we don't have some chickens & a nice big garden!!??

I've been an avid BYC reader for a few years, so now that we actually *have* chicks, I figured it was as good a time as any to actually sign up for BYC.

We have 6 chicks that are (approximately) 4 weeks old. I say approximately, as we purchased them from a Rural King, and not mail-order.

We have 2 Gold Sex Link, 2 Black Australorp, and 2 Silver Laced Wyandotte
Here they are when we first brought them home on 4/7:

We are currently keeping them inside. They have been upgraded from a plastic tub to a large dog kennel. Here is their first trip outside on 4/18:

Now we let them roam (supervised) in a large kids playpen for a few hours each day, while I clean the cage. My daughter's favorite 'chore' is watching (ok, playing with & feeding) them.

We've got a coop/run that we purchased at Rural King, and are waiting to put it together once they are old enough to be outside. We also plan on expanding the run area once they get a little bigger. I'd love nothing more than to let them free-range, but we live out in a more rural setting, so I'm concerned about predators.

Now, the only thing to do is wait for them to grow... And hope none turn out to be Roos! (We just want eggs, and as my daughter says: fluffy feathery friends!)

'First Timer' nerves aside, I'm hoping this will be a fun new adventure for our family.
