Rain and 55 deg. on Wed and 8" of new snow and now 10 deg. in southern, wis. Keeping chickens in this climate presents a lot of problems that you might not experience in milder climates. Lights, heaters, to insulate/not insulate. All questions new chicken "wranglers" should consider. I'm a new member but an observation should be noted that while advice from t he South or West may be appropriate most backyard flocks, severe climate changes can be a challenge. Many of the coops that are adequate elsewhere may not be adequate in the midwest. I'm glad I can experiment with different coop designs and materials. Even though it's cold out my hen's are happy!

Hello and welcome to BYC [IMG] Interesting point on the coops. We share and compare experiences here and if you want really good advice from closer to home there is no better place to ask than your state thread in the Where am I? Where are you! section.

Welcome to BYC. Keep them dry, draft free yet well ventilated, appropriately fed and watered and chickens can withstand a wide range of climatic conditions.
