Hi all, Just wanted to post here to introduce myself. My name's Megan and I'm so happy to have found this site.
I'm not entirely new to having chickens, although it's been awhile. My daughter was given a Silver duckwing earlier this summer and he has pretty much been a gateway chicken. She adores him and he's been a pretty awesome pet so far. He would rather be around us now than the other chickens.
My cousin had too many young chicks, so he gave us several. (we already had our silver duckwing, Buddy, so whats a few more?)
Out of those, only a few turned out to be hens, so he's taking the roos back. Except "Water" - (my kids named him) - he's turning out to be my son's bird. Low man on the todem poll.. and he's about as mellow as they get.
My daughter's birthday is tomorrow so I found her a young cochin bantam rooster. I'm not sure what color he is, but we think he's pretty cool. Now that I've seen the cochins, I just love them. I have 8 blue cochin chicks on the way and I also ordered 7 Belgian D'uccles.
They should be here next week.
We have 9 right now, mostly mixed birds, but I have a very strong interest in raising some colorful cochins! I love the calico cochin thread..
Here are some pictures of our chickens:

And here's Buddy, the bird that started all this madness ;)

Welcome to BYC, Megan! Glad you decided to join our flock. You have some beautiful chickens, and a beautiful daughter. Looks like Marlie loves chickens as much as my granddaughter (that's her pic in my avatar) does. Raising chickens is a great experience for children. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock (and your daughter).)

I love the photo of your daughter feeding the white chick, he is stretching so tall to eat out of her hand. Great photo for a calendar page.

You just taught me something, I never knew cochins came in a calico color. It is really stunning. Wish you and your family - humans and feathered - the very best. So glad you joined the flock [IMG]
