I've been scratching around here for a while and decided to join in. Back in April I built my chicken coop and a temporary run. The coop is made from recycled and leftover building materials. I did have to buy some hardware and fencing. At that time I purchased 16 chicks from a local grower. The chicks were from 1.5 to 3 weeks old and were Rhode Island Reds and Americaunas. As it turned out I had 6 hens and the rest were roosters. I have kept the 6 hens (4 RIRs and 2 Americaunas) and 1 rooster (RIR).

Here are a couple of pictures of the chicks and the coop:

Those chicks have matured and are providing us with delicious eggs. They are allowed to free range in my fenced in back yard during the day.

Here's my Rooster, Blackie (named by my grandkids).

Back in August I decided to get a few more chickens. Eight Rhode Island Reds and five Autralorps. I built a brooder to keep them in since my mature chickens are in the coop.

Last week, I moved the coop from its previous location under some trees, to a grassy area and added a covered 10' X 8' run. The new chicks are now 7 weeks old and are housed in the new run and stay in a dog house. In a few more weeks when I don't have to worry about hawks bothering them they will move in to the coop with the mature chickens and will be alllowed to free range.
