I have been using he BYC site since I got my chickens 18 months ago. Feels like I have something to share now having lost 1, survived a summer and various illness. Great to be here with the other chicken lovers and nice to meet you all.

Welcome to BYC!

Welcome, we are in Mesa, AZ. This will be our first summer. Any tips you can share?

Thanks so much for the warm welcome. Yes, we do miss "Goldy Feathers" and that was a hard lesson to learn about sustaining backyard chickens in the 118 degree AZ summer heat. Thanks again and look forward to engaging.

Sorry to hear about you losing a chicken. I know how devastating it can be. We care for them and invest so much time. My dog got one of the older of the two I now had. My dog is now on a short leash, you might say. :)

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about your loss, hope the rest of them are doing fine!

Hey there :-) Wow, yeah - probably lots of tips. Poor babies get hot really quickly and start panting and raising their wings in the early hundreds. Its important to stay on top of it and cool them down as often as you can. Letting them stand in cool water is one of the best ways I found. That cools them down pretty instantly. I believe that some people have used misters. My chickens don't like the mist to get on them so they end up avoiding the mister, but are happy to lay in the wet patch after

I am also new to AZ so hadn't realized that it doesn't really cool down at night either mid summer, so the girls weren't even getting night time respite. I had fans up in their coop last year. This year I am enclosing their coop and putting in a used evap cooler for night time cooling and also for the really hot days...

Frankly you should just keep a close watch.
