I am new to chickens, we just bought 2 each of Easter egger, barred rock, buff orpington, and black australorp pullets (hopefully!). They are all under ten days old. We will keep them for eggs and as pets. We also have horses and a cat (indoor only). We are really excited about our new chicks! We have several reference books from the library, but I would love suggestions on your favorite books on keeping chickens. On a somewhat related note, Southern States on West Broad in Henrico has a six chick minimum purchase. This Thursday they are getting in golden wyandottes, partridge rocks, Easter eggers, and brown leghorns. Pullets, I believe, and can call to confirm. I would love to get one or two golden wyandottes, but do not want to buy six more chicks. If anyone lives nearby who is interested in going in together please let me know. They are running a special where if you buy a 50lb bag of chick starter you get 6 chicks free, or buy 10 bags and get 100 free. The starter is $15.50 per bag or the chicks are 6 for $15. I can even get there by noon or so Thursday so they are not in the store being handled by other customers very long. If this is the wrong section to post this, I apologize. I have enjoyed reading all of the useful information on this site and am looking forward to continuing to learn from the others who post here!
