Hello! Been snooping around for a few weeks and I figured I might as well join. We bought a house in St Mary's county, MD a month or so ago and I've been eager to start a little bit of self-sufficient living. Initially I wanted ducks instead of chickens, but I found out duck eggs make me violently ill, so we'll either do a mixed flock or just chickens. We had pheasants when I was a kid, but I haven't had animals in a while. Eager to spend the fall and winter preparing; luckily the BF is pretty handy so we should have a snug little coop and run come spring for a few ladies. Thank you for already being such a great resource!

If you'd like to chat with other members in your state, here's a link to the Maryland state thread:

It can be helpful to touch base with others dealing with the same weather issues, help finding local breeders, etc.

And don't forget to check out the Learning Center. It's full of helpful articles on all things chicken:

Thanks for joining us!

Welcome to Backyard chickens. Do you know if you are permitted to have chickens at your new home? It's a good thing to find out before getting birds. You can count on a neighbor turning you in - if they aren't legal.

Drumstick diva, yep! No HOA, no county restrictions on livestock except cows/horses per acre, although Maryland requires registration of flocks.
