We just started back with chickens last fall after not having had poultry for the last 15 years. I also had ducks and geese 40 years ago. We resurrected our coop and poultry pen and I am now designing a light weight yet sturdy run as the number and kinds of predators we have today are different than those we had 15 years ago. Bears, fishercats & coyotes have been added to the hawks, owls, racoons, opossums and skunks not to mention ferell cats and neighborhood dogs that have always been around. We previously had a mixed flock of chickens LF and Bantam and Black African geese. Back yard chicken keeping has really changed in the last 15 years. BYC is a real blessing ... so much knowledge to share and be shared. I have been lurking around your site since last September and last night finally took the plunge and became a member. We so far have a mixed flock of bantams hens, pullets and 2 cockerels, 4 chicks and 5 eggs being set by one of our 2 hens. Amused cockerel I have been furiously reading books and searching your forums on how to treat my one of my cockerels who injured his leg...he is I feel very amused by my efforts. We deal with our roos crowing by not opening up the coop until our neighbors are up and about in the morning. Anyway so glad to have joined. Looking forward to learning a lot from your forums.
