About our chicken keeping: I am not new to chickens as we had them while I was a kid, but it has been about 22 years since I last had my own chickens. Excited to start my own flock now that we've bought our own home! We plan to start our flock (already named 'The Noton Flock' after our neighborhood) of 5-7 hens to start and a rooster, from chicks or eggs - still deciding. We're lucky to live in an area that doesn't prohibit roos - and I have already heard a roo crowing from one of my neighbors. (I'll have to pinpoint which house and make friends.) We are hoping to base our breed choices on our kids getting to participate in chicken care, enjoying a variety of egg colors rather than volume, and I'd like to try and include a heritage breeds. I have been eyeballing Araucaunas/Americaunas, Olive Eggers, Marans, and whether there is anywhere to find Buckeyes or other critical birds in my area. Maybe a Silkie or Polish too. I've found lots of answers here in my research so far, felt like time to join! About me/our family: I'm a corporate recruiter by day, married to a veteran who is a stay-at-home dad/writer, and we have a son who is almost 4 and a daughter who is almost 2. We also have a labradoodle, labrador, and cat. We just bought our first fantastic chicken-friendly home this next week. At home we're really focused on eating and growing organic, eliminating plastic use and excess waste, recycling and composting. At work as a corporate recruiter I'm constantly focused on diversity and social justice. We also plan to free school our kids. I am a big reader, teacher, connector (INFJ). Which means I enjoy finding new books to collect and read, as well as writing & sharing what I've learned on my blog. Really nice to meet y'all!
