    Hi everybody,

I've been keeping hens for more than ten years, but I'm here to say hello and see if there are others in my area (Madison Wisconsin) who are hoping to get some new chicks this spring. Up here in Wisconsin it's best to wait a bit to get your chicks, so I plan to order them for the week of 3/21/11.

It's been a hard winter here in Wisconsin. I actually lost my first hen ever to cold. I think it was a carry-on effect from a predator problem (our first--I miss my dog Java so much!) this summer. A raccoon got into our coop and pulled hens from the perch, so the perch was shunned. The hens were sleeping all over the place except for the perch and the one I lost was by herself and too close to the ground. I have since put an insulated roof on the chicken room (they get the corner of our big metal shed) and worked hard to remove access to all the alternative roosting spots. I still had to go in several nights to move birds onto the perch, and there's one that persists in sleeping in one of the nesting boxes, but I've had no further losses, so that's good!

Anyway, after losing hens to the raccoon this summer and the one to cold this winter, I'm going to order from McMurray hatchery. As you all know, there's a 25 chick minimum, and so I'm looking for others who would like a few new baby chicks this spring. If there's a good place to post such a request, let me know!

Second, you could probably post in the breeders and hatcheries. There are also other hatcheries that don't have such a high minimum if you weren't able to find anyone else to go in with you on your order.

I'm sorry for your loss! [IMG]
