Hi Everyone! My family wants to expand our house into a homestead by adding some chickens! We have 1.96 acres, a beautiful vegetable garden and room for the birds to roam. We have lots of trees to give shade and leaves to root through, but also a good amount of open space for the girls to walk in as well. Our land is bordered by a field where they grow grass for the pigs next door but our property has huge pine trees planted all around it as a natural border. I know there are chickens down our street as we hear their rooster crowing all year long!

We do not have a coop yet, no clue where to get chicks from or how to take care of them until there is a coop for them to live in. But we love eggs and want to know exactly where they are coming from!

The only other animals we have ever had were cats and fish....so, any and all advice or direction is greatly appreciated! Since it is very snowy here, I thought it was the perfect time to start reading up, and getting ready for this experience!

I can't wait to start learning more about the birds we will soon be calling "ours". Thank you all in advance!

Welcome!

How exciting! I guarantee that when you get your chickens not a day will pass that they will not give you cause to smile or chuckle.

I recommend a visit to the Learning Centre; lots of good tips there:

and some great coop ideas here:

Finally, you might want to say hello on your local thread:

I hope you enjoy BYC. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun. Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures that feature our feathered and non feathered friends

Teila has given you a good place to start your chicken education but always feel free to ask questions...everyone was new at some point.

It's nice to have you here!
