Hello. My name is Missy. I am from NY, USA. I am new to raising chickens, When I was a young girl, almost 20 years ago, my family had a few chickens that were given to them by a family that moved. In total, there was 6 hens and 7 roosters. No Idea what breeds they were.

Last week, I got 8 chickens from Tractor Supply. I do not know much about them or raising them, although they appear to have almost doubled in size since I brought them home, I could be wrong though. I currently have 6 females(for sure) 2 Tetra Tints, and 4 Golden Comets. My unsexed chicks are brahmas. They are a few days younger than the others. Is there any way to tell if they are males or females at this age? They are all currently house chickens, as I fear it is too cold for them to be outside.

There is a way to sex chicks at that age but it is very very difficult and I personally don't know how but you can buy a book on how to sex chicks.

I hope I was of some assistance.

Welcome from NH! I'm glad you're getting started with chickens! I am about at the same stage you are! We purchased 6 hens from a local farm. We bought 3 ISA Browns and 3 Barred Rocks. They GROW FAST so they may HAVE doubled in size since you brought them home! It's amazing how fast their feathers come in as well! In NH, to buy from a place like tractor supply you have to buy a minimum of 12 chicks... (We didn't know that till we went to pick them up) So we had to go to a private breeder. We are only planning on a small coop.

I hope you have an excellent time with your chicks, and good luck!
