My OEG bantam pullet cannot walk! She's been like this for almost 2 weeks! I don't know what to do! She can't use her left leg at all, and her right is weakened from not using it. She is isolated from the others with a heatlamp, water, and food. She falls on her face when she tries, and flaps her wings. My sister says it is probably brain or nerve damage because I found her like this after the other hens beat her up. I really don't know what to do. She has begun to not accept food or water, like she is fed up and wants to die. I don't want to put her out of her misery (HUMANLY!) but I'm staring to think this may be for the best. My parents made it clear from our very first chick that there would be no vet trips for the chickens. But they fell in love with this one, and are reconsidering. But what COULD a vet do, if they agreed? It's not like they could do surgery on her. Could they? That would be too expensive. Would it really be fair if she lived her life with only 1 leg? I've never had a chicken die, and I've had chickens for almost 2 years. WHAT CAN I DO?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! PLEASE HELP! PLEASE HELP! PLEASE HELP!

I'm so sorry...sounds like she's getting depressed. Without taking her to a vet no one can tell you for sure what's going on with her. I wouldn't let her suffer if she continues to deteriorate.

Your parents should take the lead in this. While she may be your chicken you shouldn't be carrying this load. Tell your parents that you need their help in making a decision. Perhaps you can

work out a deal with extra chores in exchange for them taking her to see the doc. If they say no then start thinking about what you will need to do if this bird continues to decline. Again, if this

happens, you should not be responsible for carrying out this task. Someone told bm about euthanizing a bird with dry ice. It seems the most humane as the bird just goes to sleep at night and

doesn't wake up. Search it here. Don't be caught unprepared. Again, so sorry.

Thanks, everyone. She can't really focus her eyes still. [IMG] I will try to convince parents of the vet. My mom called some and they acted like she was crazy. "A CHICKEN?" One said. "I don't do barn animals." Maybe my horse's vet will take a look..... Marek's is EXTREMELY uncommon around here. I don't know if she's been vaccinated because I got her from a breeder that came down from another state to the national poultry show of CA in stockton. I think it was Oregon..... is marek's common there? god, i hope not. all my other birds are fine, and it's been 2 weeks. I don't think she will get any better. i'm gonna cry.......................

Quote:She worked this out with her parents as an agreement before all this happened, I don't think it's right to tell her what her parents should or shouldn't do. I don't mean to be disrespectful, but do you want someone else second-guessing your parental decisions?

Campine Lover, hang in there. If you can post pics that might be helpful, maybe someone can give you sound advice.

You know what? Actually the PNW is a place where they do recommend the Marek's vaccine. How long have you had her?

Hey - I just saw a list of avian vets on another thread! There were lots in CA. Let me go look....

    Here it is! http://www.birdsnways.com/articles/abvpvets.htm

    Check
it out. You might be able to get some info over the phone. Good luck!!!

ETA - I'll keep searching...hang in there [IMG]
