ok so my duckling looks like it is having seizures... this topic best describes the issue however no clear answer was given. My duckling is a 17 day old F & W runner from metzer farms. just like the duckling in this post:

This is the video that looks EXACTLY like what is happening to mine.

I saw that it could be a bacterial infection that is possibly treatable, or possibly a vitamin deficiency. My ducklings and goslings are on Nutrena Chick Starter medicated with Amprolium from what I have been told is ok for them. They have access to plenty of water and food and everyone else seems ok (except a pekin who has obviously had the fuzz pulled off of her back and neck by one of the others, no major damage but I separated it from the others and brought it in the house). Does anyone have any idea what could be happening? and what can I do in the mean time? She will eat and drink when I help her, but that is obviously not a long term solution. any idea's?

Could be a Thiamine deficiency..I had a duckling hatch last year that was diagnosed by a vet after I took Flippy in for a consulatation.

She wouldnt drink much as water seemed to trigger The head being thrown around.

I am just racking my brain for you. I am inexperienced, but did a web search, which I'm sure you have done, and came up with zilch. I know that medicated feed is suposed to be safe, but is it possible you have a duck who has a sensitivity to this particular medication. Like some people are allergic to asprin or something. Wouldn't hurt to take the duckling off of that food, just to see. I'd leave the others on it though, if they are fine. Oh, I see duckyfromoz had an idea,, cool. I hope you get it figured out and can treat her. [IMG]

Duckyfromoz: what would you do to fix a thiamine deficiency if that was the problem?

and for the mean time I switched her food to hard boiled eggs. I won't be able to get anything else for her until friday or saturday and I think that is too long to wait. how long could I give her the hard boiled eggs for?

    Here
is a nutritional break down on eggs. The protien is high, so maybe make sure she is getting greens, or if you have rolled oats (oatmeal) you could add some of that. Do you have Brewer's yeast (not the same as bread yeast)? It is loaded with Thiamine, which the eggs do not have a lot of. Trying to think of some other sources that you may have lying around for before you can get to the feed store...I think powdered milk is a good source. Do you have a B vitamin complex for people?

My duck was on huge doses of vitamins to bring her levels back up to normal. But due to the nerves and muscles not growing properly- she is still a little odd. She also still throws her head back sometimes when she drinks... but at least can live a normal life.

well i hate to say, but the problem has gotten nothing but worse since I went to sleep. She seems to be constantly spasming and it just seems unfair to see her go through this. I feel like I will have to cull her when I get home in a couple hours. she is to weak to even stand up now. I couldn't believe how fast this came on.

all I can say is, This Sucks!

Thanks for the hug! It has been a tough night, I decided to hold off until my break from work, just to double check and see if there is a slim chance she is doing better. I still can't help but feel like it is my fault, even though I know nature has it's own plan for every living creature.

I had 3 ducklings go through this... all spasming and losing appetite. It was an infection for certain... after I treated the group it vanished. Too bad I hadn't recognized it prior to losing 3.
