Hello, so yesterday, this call duckling hatched. But since he still had a bit of yolk to absorb, I put him in a cup in the incubator, and waited. Today when I took him out, the sac shrunk a little bit it was discolored and it hardened quite a bit. His stomach is really round, not to mention. Also, he seems to be breathing pretty hard. What do I do? I don’t want to lose him. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Edit: I poked a tiny hole in the discolored part, and it looks like it’s just hardened yolk. What should I do? Is it bad for the duckling?

As much as I hate to say, ducklings with this much unabsorbed yolk usually don't fair a good prognosis, especially if there is heavy breathing occurring. You have a few options, if the yolk is completely hardened, cut it with a very sharp pair of scissors near where it connects to the abdomen (not too close). If the sac is still soft, you'll have to wait a few more days until its completely dry so bleeding/severe damage doesn't occur. Or, euthanize the duckling.

Thanks! The breathing has gotten better, but he still pants once in a while. He is wiggling a lot more, though it still looks like there is quite a bit of liquid yolk in the sac. I am trying to feed him mushed boiled egg yolk with a little bit of sugar water. Is that okay?
