Hi all, I have rescued a young goose whose owner dropped a cage on its leg when it was a gosling. I took it to a bird fancier and they said the tendon was broken and wrapped up the leg for 6wks. it was hobbling on one leg so I brought it back and put it on the pond and it went off happily with its family. It then could not get out of the dam so the owner took it up and placed it in a chook pen on hard ground for 3wks. It could not stand, let alone walk on its good leg. I took it from him and have given it hourly swims in the pool and hope that it will get the strength back in its good leg. Please I do not want to put it down but I want to give it a chance. Any suggestions? That is the non working leg as it is totally fused at the knee.

The injury will likely never heal completely, but I'm pretty sure you're aware of that.

Things that can help with leg injuries are daily soaks in Epsom salt solution to increase circulation and relax muscles spasm. Treatment with B-vitamins such as a comprehensive B-complex such as B-100 will help restore nerve connections and strengthen legs.

Last, and first, do what you've been doing with the daily swim therapy. That, more than anything else, will strength muscles and tendons around the injured tendon, and there's a decent chance this goose will be able to walk again.

Thanks for your reply, I would just like for it to be comfortable on one good leg :)

Thank you for responding to this, as it helps me, too. My pekin duck has been going through it. Her leg is swollen, hot; but I don't think infected. I've removed her for bed rest, but she also has developed wet feather, making swimming really hard for her. She's eating, drinking and pooping okay. I'm hoping time and a molt will help her.
