Tonite was the second egg for one of my hens. Not sure which one laid it, but the other egg was laid saturday, and there hasnot been another until tonight. I kmnow I didn't get in time, so when I went and looked, she was eating it. Is there a way to stop this? Maybe it was cracked and that's why she ate it? What do I do?? If the same hen laid this egg, this would be her second, so maybe she is still immature??
This is what we did for one of our hens that insisted on pecking a hole in her egg. We took three golf balls ( one for each nest box) and painted two of them to the same color as the two different brown eggs, and left one white, as we also have a white egg layer. We did notice, however, that this hens only ever pecked at the brown eggs, never the white ones. Anyway, although we have seen some pretty interesting peck marks in those golf balls, we have NOT had anymore brown eggs come up with holes pecked in them. Hope this suggestion helps you ~ :-D ~Red
thanks redhead! I will try the golf ball trick and hope it works! I was rading some older posts about egg eating and someone said keeping the coop dark helped. My coop is totally in the dark!!! So who knows! Anyway, I will add the golf ball and cross my fingers!
