Hello everyone! I am fairly new to farming! I started small, slowly adding to my growing family farm. I have 8 chickens...a mix of 2 I bought in February and 6 more I added last August, as well as 4 Pekin ducks, a mallard and khaki campbell, both hens...So, I was outside this yesterday evening with my flock getting ready to put them up for the night (they free range all day) and I have been noticing one on my hens “Raisin” has had feathers missing on her back. I researched it (thank goodness for internet right) but found nothing to be alarmed about. But she was losing more and more...I would find a few in my nesting boxes and thought maybe she was using them in her nest but everyday it seemed more were missing...I haven’t seen the others pecking at her but maybe I’ve missed it??? Idk...but I pick her up to look closer and it looks awful. I start lifting her wings to check her out and find a nickel/quarter size hole with a yellowy mucous like, cork type scab inside...I gently run my fingernail over it and it peels out (YUCK!) obviously it wasn’t gonna go back inside the wound so it’s now open...I cleaned the wound with an iodine/water solution, fill it with neosporin then spray it with Vetericyn and plan on doing this 2-3 times a day...I put her in a small dog kennel inside the run so she could see her buddies. I wasn’t sure if I should leave her to roam around and make it worse? Or if leaving her with the flock would be okay? Does she need to separated? If so, Do I need to move her out of the run completely? is there anything more I should do to the wound? Someone said to close the hole/wound with superglue?? Is that something I should do? Any and all advice/suggestions are much appreciated!

Do you have a rooster ? That may be rooster damage caused by his toe nails or spurs while breeding the hen. There may also be feather pecking/plucking going on. I would not return her to the flock if you have a rooster.

Today when I went out to the chickens, one of my hens also had some feathers missing. That hole really looks terrible though! Maybe you could try distancing her from the rooster or just make it so shes safe before more breeding. I would try to keep the hole clean to not risk any infection.

The rooster definitely is in dire need of a proper pedicure.

Disinfect the wounds using a spray and afterwards spray on some antibiotics and she will heal in time. But keep her separately until she is healed completely.

How many hens and roosters do you have in total?
