    Is this for a horse?

There are tons of videos online but the best thing is to have the vet or someone else knowledgeable show you. I think it helps people feel more confident about doing these things on their own.

To see if you are in a blood vessel, simply pull back on the syringe after sticking the needle into the animal. If you are in a vessel, you will draw back blood. If you are in the muscle (or subq, so be sure of the anatomy!) you will get nothing when you pull back.

Good luck! Giving IM shots is not too bad if you do them safely and carefully, but it is always good to be aware of the complications too.

If you are raising goats for meat, you do not want to give an injection into the muscles in the hind leg or the back. It causes scarring and damages the muscle tissue, which decreases the quality of the carcass and can cause considerable loss of value. Injections can safely be given in the neck muscles instead.
