A few days ago, 6 days from today, my grandmother's hen ate all her eggs, about 12💔 She waited for them to hatch then pecked them death. I managed to save 3 and 1 egg, 2 died bc of the injuries and the remaining one, was pecked both sides of the head. Luckily the bleeding stopped. The problem is the leg, idk it could be the hock joint. It's flat at the joint and it looks like it's positioned sideways and up. The chick can't even hop on it. I've tried soaking it in warm water with Epsom salt. It's scared of everything and everyone.

The good news is the egg we saved, hatched into a naughty chick😹 Both chicks eat well and drink okay. The injured one really breaks my heart. Any suggestions??

Welcome to BYC! :frow

Sounds like the chick could be suffering from a deformity..

https://www.merckvetmanual.com/poul...ctious-skeletal-disorders-in-poultry-broilers

while most writing is directed at broilers.. these things happen in standard and heritage fowl as well.

Another unfortunate commonly seen possibility in newly hatched chicks is called splayed leg. Usually the looseness is at the hip joint in this condition.

Both things described above are conditions they hatch with and not typically injury.

Do you feel any extra heat or swelling coming from the area you've identified? Does the leg move at the joint if you assist? Are you able to post any pics or link a video.. usually using another platform and linking the video here.

Are you in the US? Adding your general location to your profile can help folks make their best suggestions possible at a glance.. like what supplements, feed stuff, or other resources are most relevant.

After 6 days.. hope of walking is diminishing. :(

@Eggcessive TIA, for any feedback.

It may be a slipped Achilles tendon. You can try to fix it, sometimes it works, sometimes not. It's usually a deformity, often by nutritional deficiencies in the parent birds, or genetics.

Here is a video showing a tendon slipping in and out of place:

I would try to figure if it is a slipped tendon, but it looks like a twisted tibia or varus leg deformity. Also use some human vitamin B complex 1/4 tablet daily crushed into a little water, and given with a dropper. Chicken vitamins are fine if they contain riboflavin. This article just below is good for determining if it is a slipped tendon.

Be careful if splinting which can get too tight or cause worse problems.
