On Monday we bought our first 4 baby chicks ever! I'm so happy I found BYC, without it we would be completely lost! They are all 11 days old now. Three of the babies are doing very well, they are growing great, doubled in size since we got them..and then there's Princess. She has barely grown at all! She seems to be just as happy and energetic as the rest of them but she doesn't seem to be growing. Is she okay? Maybe she is just always going to be a smaller chicken? Could she have hatched a day or two later then the other ones so she may be younger? Any ideas? Suggestions?

Also, the other day I was told I could give them a hard boiled egg and they didn't need grit, is this correct? How often can I give them one I want to give one today but it was only two days ago I gave them the first.

Some chicks are just runty but grow up to be normal chickens. I have one in every bunch. Just mash up the egg with a fork until its crumbly

Thank You! I can stop worrying about her now, that is what my boyfriend was thinking but because he's never owned chickens I didn't know if there really were runts. [IMG]

Also, breed may be a factor as well. Or whether the chick is bantam or standard size (bantams are miniature chickens ;) ). Do you know what breed(s) your chicks are?

We bought them from a lady here in town offline, she has a farm here, according to her ad they are EE. I will post a picture they all look almost exactly the same except the patterns on the top of their heads. Here is a picture of them during their outside play time today![IMG]

To me, she doesn't look that much smaller than the others. Something else to consider, EEs are kind of a grab bag. They have no standard, so they can pretty much look like anything and lay any colored egg. Not all chickens are built the same, some are big bodied, other petite.
I wouldn't worry to much about as long as she's acting normally. Your chicks are adorable, enjoy them :)
    Good luck!

Thank You!! She acts pretty normal, when we had them outside earlier the other ones were all running around playing and she would join in for a few minutes and then just lay down and try and bite at the grass, maybe shes just lazy! Lol Thank you for replying I will try not to worry so much! [IMG]

They are beautiful! Our littlest one is now the second biggest and the one that was the biggest is almost the smallest. They are growing like crazy! What kind of chicken is the third one, the black and brown one??
