Hello
Would really appreciate if anyone could help. Thank you
We have a hen that last week had watery eyes and a large crusty lesion in her oral cavity.
after doing some research online we found her symptoms best fitted with an oral canker and recently there has been a lot of flooding rains where she may picked up infection.
We spoke to our vet and have been given flagyl (metronidazole) which she has been on for about 4 days now. The oral canker has gone but now her face is very swollen especially on her left and slightly on her right. Today she had some bleeding from her left eye. Is this a sinus infection? We are trying some warm compresses and syringe feeding her. The first picture is her left eye and the second is her better right eye
thank you for any suggestions

Welcome To BYC

Is all the canker/mucous, etc. gone from inside her beak?
I see bubbles in the "good" eye and some facial swelling at her sinus on that side.
The bleeding eye is concerning, she may have scratched it poked in on some wire - it's possible it could be from infection as well.

If another visit to the vet is an option that would be good.

Gently try to flush the bleeding eye out with saline so you can get a better look - see if the eye is intact. Flush the other one out too. I would use Terramycin eye ointment or you can use triple antibiotic ointment in the eye as well.

You may have more than one issue going on here - respiratory illness along with the canker, hard to know. Another antibiotic in conjunction with the Metronidazole is likely needed. Tylosin or one of the "cyclines" would be good - you vet can probably get these faster than you can. Getting some testing to find out the cause is a very good idea.

Canker and respiratory diseases are contagious and can make birds carriers all their life. Medications can treat symptoms. If she's in bad shape, then culling may be another option to consider as well.

Hello thanks for your replies and for the excellent detailed advice. :) We gently washed the bloody mucous and the eye underneath looks ok. We will start some antibiotic eye drop and try to speak to the vet tomorrow about getting an extra antibiotic.
almost all of the canker has gone from inside her beak but just a small bit remains. It seemed to respond to the flagyl well. Hopefully the swelling goes down soon. She is well separated from the rest of the flock and they have been carefully monitored and aren’t showing any symptoms thankfully.

I'm glad the eye underneath is o.k.!
Good that you will be able to consult your vet to see if they can help you with other medications.
Keep us posted on how she's doing.
