My 1 1/2 year-old hen has been walking around with her tail down. As she was standing up in the yard, yellow, runny yolk poured out of her vent. What is going on?? Any suggestions? Does this mean she is egg bound?

It sounds like an egg may have broken inside of her. There's thread discussing a similar scenario here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/626539/egg-yolk-coming-from-vent.

Egg yolk peritonitis is a risk of egg matter being retained in the hen. She needs to pass the matter, especially any shell, that's still in there. More info: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/526089/egg-yolk-peritonitis.

Does she have access to adequate calcium to help with forming solid shells? I think some hens may have genetic predispositions to develop egglaying problems - I lost a RIR to EYP fairly recently.

Hope your girl gets better soon.

Thank you for your response. I did take her to the vet today and she indeed has egg yolk peritonitis (sp?). Things do not look so well for my sweet hen. :( We are giving antibiotics and will give a hormone implant under the skin tomorrow to stop her egg laying that would only compound the problem.
