So my daughter talked me into letting her show ducks.(along with 2 goats,2 Lambs & 2 rabbits.) We were recommended Bantam mallard Grey call ducks. We have one female and one male. Unbeknownst to myself,I have become completely fascinated with these things. I guess you never really get to watch how a duck lives its everyday life!!
Anyway, just looking for tips and suggestions for preparing them for show. Couldn't seem to find a lot online. Want to make sure they look their absolute best!! Any special food I can add, or tips for making them shine? I would like to make sure their colors are most vibrant,as well as their bills and legs. We have about 2 1/2 more weeks. They look beautiful now, however I want to represent this beautiful breed at its best! Thanks in advance!

its just grey call ducks. if you say mallard grey call ducks it sounds like you are talking about mixed breeds. Also alittle dry cat food in their diet and a good bath will really help their coat shine, also be sure that they are slightly plump( not fat or over weight!) but like they look well fed this will help the judges see the chubby cheeks that a call is known for, it will also bring more attention to the bill and make it look smaller.

Thanks for clarifying what I should call them!! They get fresh water to bathe and preen in usually twice a day if not more. Is there a certain cat food? They don't seem too "plump". Is there anything we can feed to achieve this? Free feeding maybe? Also if they get a bath, should we use dawn, people shampoo, conditioners? And lastly,I read you can put something on their bills and feet if they look flaky or dry think it was Vaseline or a type of oil.anyone know?
I caught myself losing about 30/40 minutes today just watching them![IMG]

    They are adorable arent they.

I use blue buffalo and i only use alittle but im sure friskes or anything else will be fine. Corn can help to give them a bit more weight just be careful how much you feed them and get them the chopped corn (or something like that ) at like tractor supply, and dont use much use about a cup of corn for every 3 cups of their normal food. I think there is a special conditioner out there, but when i bath mine for show i dont use soap or anything i just let them bathe for a week every 5 hours of the day and they keep clean rather than them going back out in the aviary and getting all dirty i keep mine in an indoor enclosure starting at a week before the show. I do not know about the bill part flakyness thing I would just use water to keep it wet.

Best of luck i hope you find something for the bill :).
