    Hello all,

My boyfriend just got 3 chickens for his birthday but we fear that the white one in the bunch is a rooster, as he makes way more noise that sounds similar to that of a rooster crow.

Its an all white bird with a blackish face. A distinct blue marking by the ear area. sorry for the blurry images. you can see that there is small red flap that hangs under the chin off the neck. We think he is a rooster and will have to give him to a farm since we cannot keep him around the hens as we want eggs. If anyone knows for sure if this is a hen or a rooster it would be a huge help! Thanks alot!

And yes, from the streamers and hackle feathers your Silkie is a cockerel.

It looks like your silkie is a cockerel. If you are allowed to have roosters where you live, you could always keep him. Fertile eggs are 100% edible and really don't look or taste any different from infertile ones. In order for an egg to start to develop into a chick, it would need to be incubated at 100 degrees for over 24 hours. As long as you collect eggs 1-2 times a day during hot months, it shouldn't be an issue. If your hens are large fowl, there's a chance that he might not have a lot of success mating with them anyway.
