Have you seen any evidence of fowl pox in your flock lately? The yellow on his tongue could be evidence of wet fowl pox, but canker can also affect the mouth and throat of chickens. Pox is a virus, while canker is a protozoan that requires medication such as metronidazole. Do you have a vet that could see him?

I got some phone numbers today to poultry vets and there is currently an outbreak of fowl pox in my yard but he hasn't been exposed to any of those hens

Fowl pox is spread by mosquitoes and flies, so they wouldn't have to be around them. Here are some pictures of the yellow patches of wet fowl pox in the mouth and throat of chickens:

I would separate the ones with pox if possible, but pox has to run it's course over 2-3 weeks, and there is no cure. I would put some iodine on the scabs on the outside of the body (don't disturb the scabs,) but remove any yellow patches that you see inside the mouth and aaapply iodine to them also. There is a fowl pox vaccine for those chickens that have not been affected. Are there any scabs around the eyes? If so, I would put some Vetericyn eye gel, Terramycin eye ointment, or plain Neopsorin into the eyes to help prevent an eye infection.

how do you remove yellow patches from inside the mouth? I have just noticed that my 3 mo lakenvelder pullet has it. it is a part of the outside scab so I don't know if it is possible to remove it.
