Kung Foo Chicken Chillin' With My Peeps

My D'uccle hen has been sitting on five eggs.

Last night two chicks hatched. This morning though I found she had kicked the two chicks out of the nest. They both appeared dead. I was carrying them into the house in the palm of my hand and both livened up and started peeping. I'm assuming they were chilled. One has a piece of skin missing about half the size of a dime on it's back.

What can be used on this very tiny chick for this wound? I would take photos but, I have them in the incubator now as I was lucky enough to have a few eggs that I was hatching that are due tomorrow.

Strange hen also pushed the other three eggs that were pipping to the edge of the nest (cold) so she could cuddle with her golf ball. I'm guessing she doesn't like eggs that peep. Those eggs went into the incubator too.

Oh yeah she's going to be a cull no doubt.

If it were me, I would put them in a brooder by themselves under a heat source with plenty to eat and vitamins in their water, springling their starter on the floor and dipping their beaks in the water to get them started. I would watch carfully the one that's hurt so that I could remove it if the other pecks at it's wounds. If that happens, separate them so that they can still see each other. They don't do well isolated. I don't really know what would be best, as far as treating the injured one. Hopefully some one has advice there. Good luck and sorry about the clutch. You never know about hens somtimes! They may be good setters but awful mommas or vice versa!

I sure wouldn`t trust her to keep the eggs or to EVER hatch any more. Some hens just don`t get it. Best antibiotic ointment I`ve found in 51 years is Corona. It`s in the equine section of most feed stores in a little yellow tub(about a pint). Will last for years, but very good stuff to have on hand. Good luck.....Pop

Thanks! Here they are. I tried to show the wound but, this is the best I could do. I am surprised they recovered so quickly. I thought they were dead. The pipped eggs are peeping again. I blocked the nest boxes to keep the golf ball broody from sitting any longer and took the ball from them too.

They will go in the brooder tomorrow. I had them out in my pocket part of the day to work with them in drinking/eating on/off.
