Hi, hoping for help identifying the breed of my rooster... We now have several of his hatchlings from Rhode Island Red hens and I am curious what he is... Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks... [IMG]

He might be a marans, or a mix.

Thank you, Marans was what I thought, but was a little unsure because of feathers going down his legs... I'm still a bit new to chickens and trying to learn as much as possible...

A marans bred to the standard should have feathered shanks, that being said, there are still a lot of clean legged marans around.

Thanks so much everyone... Now it's time to see how my Marans/RIR chicks turn out...

I would go with birchen marans. Here is a pic of one from greenfire farms and yes, the feathered shanks are as they should be for a true marans.[IMG]
He should add some darker brown or sometimes speckles to the egg-layers he fathers.

Yes, that is almost a dead ringer for him, awesome... Thanks!
We have, after 3 hatches, various ages of chicks from him and RIR... 4 black and 6 yellow...
