I got a baby chicken as a gift. I have no idea how to care for it. It might be a week or 2 weeks old. I have the food and everything. Ive been keeping it warm with a heat pack made out of rice and cloth. Its my second day and it looks like its yawming. It opens its mouth alot. It can walk and eat. Im scared. Is it normal that it opens its mouth??? I really am freaking out.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join us here! They do yawn and stretch yes, but it could also be a problem with the food. Is your food fine enough for the chick to eat? If the chick crumb is too large this can cause a problem for them. You may need to grind it up more for the chick. Have you thought about getting it a friend? They do so much better when they have a friend. Here is a mice article from the learning centre ~https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/...ks-the-first-60-days-of-raising-baby-chickens

Wishing you the very best of luck and enjoy BYC :frow

What kind of feed are you giving it? Maybe it would go down easier, if it was dampened a bit. Are you using feed for young chicks? I answered you on another thread re: having a chick in an apartment.
